The Chinese Consulate General in Toronto Han Tao praises the Federation of Chinese Canadians in Markham in holding a series of flag raising ceremonies to celebrate the Chinese National Day

The cloudy and cold weather in the morning could not seem to curb the enthusiasm of the overseas Chinese to celebrate the birthday for their motherland. When the five-star red flag was raised, a sense of national pride came to life and people were encouraged.

The Federation of Chinese Canadians in Markham (FCCM) and The Federation of Chinese Canadians in York Region (FCCYR) held a series of flag raising ceremonies on September 30, 2018 to celebrate the 69th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China which falls on October 1.

The Chinese Consulate General in Toronto Han Tao attended the flag raising ceremonies in Richmond Hill, Markham and Vaughan. He said this year marks the 40th anniversary of China’s reform and opening-up policy. China’s economy has made great achievements. China is already the second largest economy in the world. China’s sustainable development will be beneficial to the global development.

Consul General Han Tao also mentioned the important progress of the “Belt and Road” initiative advocated by China in the past five years. More than 100 countries have joined in, and Canada officially became a member of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank in March this year.

In addition, this year is the “China-Canada Tourism Year”. Consul General Han Tao said that the number of Chinese tourists visiting Canada last year reached 680,000, an increase of 12% year-on-year, and the spending reached 1.6 billion Canadian dollars. He expects that the number of Chinese tourists visiting Canada this year will reach a new high, and Richmond Hill, Markham and Vaughan will benefit from it.

Han Tao, Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Toronto, particularly praised the Federation of Chinese Canadians in Markham and the Federation of Chinese Canadians in York Region who held a series of flag raising ceremonies to celebrate the Chinese National Day. It strengthened the ties between overseas Chinese and the motherland, and promoted the contacts and friendship between the people of China and Canada.

In a welcoming speech, Dr. Ken Ng, Chairman of the Federation of Chinese Canadians in Markham and the Federation of Chinese Canadians in York Region, said that the flag raising ceremony of the Chinese flag was held in addition to celebrating China’s National Day and celebrating the culture and heritage of our Chinese roots.

Dr. Ng also said that we are equally proud of the country of our immigration, because we are here to work, live and take root. We have the dual heritage of China and Canada and can celebrate the traditions of both countries.
