中秋節 Mid-Autumn Festival

Mid-Autumn Festival 中秋節

The time of the Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival, is fast approaching. This is the time when the Chinese people celebrate their harvests, a happy occasion very similar to our Canadian Thanksgiving.

中秋節,是華人慶祝豐收的喜慶日子。相比之下,加拿大的感恩節與之非常相似,兩個節日都是傳統意義上家庭團聚的大日子。

Mid-Autumn Fairy Tale

Mid-Autumn Festival, also called moon festival, is linked to a sad love story of a hero and his wife. In ancient time, ten suns existed. The suns caused extreme heat and was killing all living things. Hou Yi saved the Earth by shooting down nine suns.

The Queen of Heaven granted him an elixir that could make him immortal. Because he wanted to stay with his wife, Chang E, he did not drink the elixir. Peng Meng found out about the elixir. He rushed to their house while Hou Yi was out hunting. He demanded Chang E to hand over the elixir. Chang E knew she could not win against Peng Meng, so she drank the elixir. Upon drinking, the elixir made Chang E to fly higher and higher toward the moon. When Hou Yi received the news, he was devastated and shouted Chang E’s name to the sky. He held a memorial ceremony under the moon and offered food to her. Since then, people offered food to worship the moon.

Now Mid-Autumn Festival symbolizes reunion of family and praying for good luck and peace.
