February 8, 2016 MARKHAM— The much anticipated Year of the Monkey has finally arrived. TD-FCCM Markham Chinese New Year Celebrations officially commenced with the Ford Lunar New Year Festival at Markham Pan Am Centre at 12pm on February 5. The festival ran for 3 days from February 5th to 7th, attracting thousands of participants. There were over 70 booths selling food, drinks, flowers, and Chinese traditional art work.
Hundreds of citizens were joined by Federation of Chinese Canadians in Markham (FCCM) Chairman Dr. Ken Ng, Markham Deputy Mayor Jack Heath, and TD representative Yuki Cheung and Annie Ho at the countdown show featuring Mr. Lung Kee Lee (李龍基) from Hong Kong to welcome the year of the Monkey. Other honourable guests included Markham Councillor Alan Ho, Pacific Mall representative Edwin Wung. The countdown show started at 10pm with magic performances and various singing and dance performances.
Today, Chinese New Year Day, the celebrations returned to Pacific Mall to celebrate the arrival of the year of the monkey. The Pacific Mall was jammed with thousands of guests, including Ontario PC Party leader Patrick Brown, Markham-Unionville M.P. Bob Saroya and Markham City Councillor Alan Ho. Guests were dazzled by the amazing performances provided by the TD-FCCM celebration at Pacific Mall today and went home with red pockets, mandarins and pin wheels to bring forth good luck.
Dr. Ken Ng gave warm greetings to everyone and gave special thanks to TD Bank Group for being the Presenting Partner with FCCM for the event, and also thank other community partners, City of Markham and organizer, Pacific Mall. Dr. Ken Ng was delighted to see so many people come out to this event during this festive time of the year. He encouraged visitors from all backgrounds to come out to Markham Civic Centre ( on HW 7 & Warden) and Pacific Mall on Saturday February 13th, for more celebration of the dazzling monkey.
